Thomas Ashby – Eat My Heart Out/Little Us – EP Review

Review by Tom Coombs

In the last year Thomas Ashby has blown up, from playing at an event part run by Pixie Lott, who in turn shared a video on Instagram of the performance, to being picked as record of the week on BBC Introducing Kent this week.  There is just no stopping the pure talent of the singer/songwriter from Ramsgate.

In December at The Penny Theatre in Canterbury he had the official release of the new EP, it was great success and a very entertaining night. Filled with lots of local talent that showed just what music is out there.

The new EP 'Eat My Heart Out/Little Us' is a three track showcase and was co-produced and mastered by Andre Dack and even though more of a single release it does not change the quality of the music.  I said in my last review of Thomas Ashby (here) that he was a one man Mumford and Sons and I can say truly that this hasn't changed except he has only gone and got better.

The first track ‘Eat My Heart Out’ is what I expected from this young talent, fast paced, heart pounding delicacy that makes you dance from the first beat.  The guitar work is actual magic and I can’t fault a second of it, the simple beat which Thomas plays himself if you have ever seen him live ,brings the toe tapping part of the song.  All this great music is brought together with the vocals which mix perfectly, changing pace with the music and drawing you into a hit that should be being heard across the world.

Next up is the second title track ‘Little Us’, this has a slower start with some nice simple guitar play being led by the delicate vocals.  The rhythm slowly quickens before the faster guitar chords come in but it doesn't go crazy and stays with the slower pace.  This is more about the vocals even in the funky chorus which is more dance making like the first track but it feels as this is still all about what he is saying.  This is a beautiful song and really shows the diversity of Thomas Ashby’s talent.

The final track ‘Bittersweet End’ is a much more stripped back song.  It starts with some great acoustic lead guitar playing which leads nicely into the vocals.  It is another fantastic song which really shows the power in Thomas Ashby’s vocals and is great ending to another outstanding EP from one of the greatest local talents. 'Eat My Heart Out/Little Us' is out now.

If you haven’t heard of Thomas Ashby then I promise you it won’t be long before you do.  For fans of the new wave of acoustic folk styles like Mumford and Sons and Ed Sheeran, but do not think it is part of a trend this is a singer/song-writer that has only just begun to show what he can do.

5 stars – Without doubt the best way to finish 2014 and start 2015, a 100% amazing EP
