Review by Tom Coombs
The multi-instrumentalist from Manchester is back and he has had some serious coverage since his EP we reviewed with plays on BBC 6Music and Radio 2 with Dermot O’Leary, and he is back with his July release single ‘Whatever Happened to John?’.
From a very indy-alt-rock vibe of the last release we looked at, James has gone full on folk rockabilly on this one, it is like Imelda May meets Bob Dylan. It even throws in what seems like a blues styles in the hooks and harmonica.
What I always find crazy is James plays every instrument you hear in this track, even though this does seem like a full on band. One thing you can’t say is this guy is not talented. And with the help of Abbey Road Studios and Alex Wharton who mastered this single James Holt has a hit on his plate here.
It has the funky rockabilly and also has this middle section which breaks up song and gives you little mixed up section before heading back to final act is the only to describe this as. There is so much going on in this fast paced song but it all crashes together amazingly and flows so smoothly. If this is the way going forward I am looking forward to what is coming next.
The single ‘Whatever Happened to John?’ is out now and available right here.
